SafeSport Update from AWSA

From the newest message from AWSA:

Dear USA-WSWS Local Organizing Committee,

USA Water Ski and Wake Sports’ top priority continues to be creating safe, healthy and positive environments free from abuse for all of our members. As part of our commitment to safeguard athletes, USA-WSWS has approved an updated Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP) applicable to all members and LOCs. These required updates come from the U.S. Center for SafeSport (the “Center”). USA Water Ski and Wake Sports’ updated MAAPP document has been approved by the Center and is required to be fully implemented by USA Water Ski & Wake Sports’ and its LOCs in full beginning January 1, 2022. Below are some key takeaways and requirements for Local Organizing Committees to understand and focus on:

  • Education and Training – SafeSport Training is required for all USA-WSWS active members 18 years and older beginning January 1, 2022

  • Communication and Reporting - Event organizers must communicate to all event personnel and participants that they will be required to adhere to the MAAPP for the duration of the event. Event organizers must also communicate information on how to report violations of the MAAPP This information must be communicated to all Event Personnel and participants within 30 days prior to the start of the event. Please see the Sanctioned Event Safe Sport Requirements for sample language and additional communication resources.

  • Day of Event Check-In Procedures – Event organizers must ensure that any day-of registrants or volunteers receive MAAPP requirements, receive information on how to report violations of the MAAPP, have completed SafeSport Training, and are not listed on the USA-WSWS Suspended and Banned Members list. Organizers must also maintain a list of all individuals who register on the day of the event.

  • Locker Rooms and Changing Areas – Event organizers must ensure that all changing areas provide adequate privacy and that they are regularly and randomly monitor all locker rooms and changing areas to ensure that MAAPP requirements are being followed

We encourage our LOCs to take advantage of the free trainings for parents, adult athletes, coaches and administrators that focus on the successful implementation of the 2022 MAAPP – these trainings can be accessed at www.uscenterforsafesport.org/maapp.

Reports to the Center can be made electronically through the Center’s website at uscenterforsafesport.org/report-a-concern or by calling (833) 5US-SAFE (587-7233).

We will continue to provide support in any way possible for our membership. For questions regarding the updated MAAPP OR to report a concern or violation of the MAAPP to USA Water Ski & Wake Sports, please email compliance@usawaterski.org.
